How Coaching Can Help You and Your Horse
Rosie's unique way of coaching helps riders, of all ages and levels, to recognise their strengths and overcome what has been holding them back enabling them to enjoy a new level of awareness, understanding, expertise, and confidence.
Riding coaching goes beyond conventional riding instruction to help you understand your horse’s behaviour and movement. You'll learn to recognise and develop a feel for your optimum, balanced riding position. You'll discover how to build confidence in your horse through ridden and ground exercises. And, if necessary, you'll be able to re-school or re-train your horse after an injury or other problem.
Imagine coming away from every session feeling wonderfully positive about your riding – and with a clear understanding of how you can practice at home.
Through riding coaching you can achieve
- A clearer understanding of your riding goals, aims and objectives
- Consistent progress, performance, and results – which naturally leads to increasing motivation and enthusiasm
- A greater sense of enjoyment and achievement from riding
- An enhanced feeling of partnership with your horse
- Increased confidence in yourself and your horse
- A toolkit of useful exercises you can practice
- A video diary of your progress that you can watch at home
You will find that Rosie brings a wonderful energy, fun, and enthusiasm to your riding coaching sessions. She combines her intuitive understanding of people and horses with a great attention to detail. She has a lifetime of experience with horses, which she integrates with her traditional British Horse Society (BHS) training and professional coaching skills.
How will your riding coaching unfold?
Your riding coaching begins with a simple, relaxed conversation about your current riding ability and skills. This is an opportunity to talk with Rosie about your level of riding training, expertise, and confidence. You can tell her what you’ve already accomplished with your horse or pony, and any problems that you may want help with.
Following this informal chat, Rosie will make an initial assessment to
- Get to know you and your horse, and how you work together as a partnership
- Take a brief history of your riding experience
- Assess your horse’s behaviour, movement, and level of training
- Assess your riding ability
- Offer an honest, straightforward, practical, and positive appraisal
- This initial assessment provides the foundation for further coaching
Rosie tailors each riding coaching session specifically for you, intuitively crafting it from your requests on the day of your training. Your training may be riding or dismounted sessions.
Your coaching sessions may include
- Clarifying your goals, aims, and objectives
- Identifying your strengths and areas for development
- Creating an individual training plan
- Identifying any inner barriers, and discussing options to overcome them, including relaxation and visualisation techniques
- Improving your level of confidence
- Watching video footage of you riding your horse, to help you clearly see how fast you are progressing
- Recognise and celebrate your success!
Rosie always gives you plenty of time and space to make the progress you want to make at the speed you want to make it. She helps you raise your awareness, develop your understanding, build your confidence, and improve your communication with your horse. She brings a depth of patience and a quiet determination that supports and guides you every step of the way.
Specific riding exercises may include
Flatwork/Dressage, to
- Raise awareness of your correct body position and understanding of how it effects your horse’s movement and performance
- Create a balanced, straight – yet supple - riding position
- Develop a more balanced, supple, and relaxed horse
- Develop your feel for a correct way of going
- Build a solid foundation to your training
- Improve quality of flatwork – balance, rhythm, suppleness, and freedom of movement
- Improve dressage marks – attention to basic transitions, school movements, and training patterns
- Improve communication and partnership with your horse
- Provide training exercises for practise between sessions
Dressage forms the basis of training of a horse, which directly influences all aspects of riding from hacking to jumping to the highest levels of dressage.
Groundwork, which may include
- In-hand work
- Pole work
- Lungeing and/or long reining
This helps develop greater awareness and understanding of your horse’s movement, muscular development, behaviour, and natural way of going. For example, a stiff horse can become a supple horse and a crooked horse a straight horse. By enhancing his or her natural balance, your horse can move with more freedom. Spookiness reduces when tension and stiffness release and relax, allowing your horse’s muscles to work more effectively.
You’ll be given clear instruction in training techniques to support your progress.
Jumping, to
- Raise awareness of the importance of your correct jumping position
- Build physical strength and fitness, and fine-tune the technique of both you and your horse, using grid exercises
- Bring the value of flatwork into jumping, to ride courses
- Provide training exercises for practice between sessions
Through your riding coaching sessions you discover how to develop a calm, confident harmony with your horse. This comes about naturally as you form a solid foundation of training based on trust, understanding, and knowledge. You’ll find you increasingly enjoy improving your partnership and performance with your horse.
